Cordyceps Sinensis (Yartsa Goenbub)  is a unique and exotic mushroom that grows in the mountains of Bhutan at an elevation between 14,500 feet and 17,000 feet, just meters below the snow line. Cordyceps sinensis literally means summer plant and winter insect in Tibetan. Before the rainy season begins, spores of the Cordyceps mushroom settle on the heads of caterpillars’ that lives underground. The fungus gets so much into the body of the caterpillars’ that it grows out through its head and drains all the energy from the insect and ultimately it dies.

Cordyceps Sinensis has a long history in Tibet Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine. The mushroom has been used for centuries to address and treat various health conditions and to maintain normal functions of all the body systems. To go to where the Cordyceps is, you have to travel for no less than seven days by horse, on foot, and finally by yak up to the snow line where the wild Cordyceps grows. The air is so thin at that altitude and the elements are so harsh that most westerners never make it to this destination.

Bhutan Cordyceps is an annual harvest that matures between May to July of the year. Every year, in late June, licensed Bhutanese farmers will ascend the sacred mountains in the regions of Paro, Wangduephodrang, Gasa, Lhuntse, Trashigang, Trashiyangtse, and Bumthang in search of Cordyceps. After collections, all Bhutanese farmers will convene in a bidding session to determine the value of their harvest.

Various measures are put in place to restrict the overall harvest, including a ban on collection except during the months of mid-May to mid- June.

Managing Cordyceps harvesting has proved to be extremely difficult because the high alpine areas are very remote with major collection areas near the border of the Tibetan Autonomous Region of China. Cordyceps collectors have to climb the highest mountains in the cold, snowy winter. After spending several nights in the way, they reach the place where they can harvest cordyceps. Temperatures will be in negative. As there won’t be any shops in those locations, they have to carry everything that they need during their stay. Some people suffer from altitude sickness, and there are also many cases of accidents, including death.

It was on June 17, 2004, a royal command by His Majesty the King, lift the sanction, allowing one member from each Bhutanese household to harvest the Yartsa Goenbub (Cordyceps Sinensis).

In 2008, the Bhutan Government improvised the only one member from each family sanction, allowing anyone from family to collect.

Due to over-harvesting and inflated price, in 2009, the Bhutan Government imposed a new set of rule, restricting only three members of each household for harvesting.

On top of the restriction, all licensed farmers have to pay a Royalty charge of 10 per cent from their export earnings.

Energy Booster: One of the most undeniable health benefits of Cordyceps is its ability to significantly boost energy levels and has long been known to athletes for the bursts of energy it can provide. Cordyceps increases the amount of oxygen uptake in the body and enhances cellular energy production, thereby providing that extra push for people who need a shot of energy!

Heart Health: Research studies on the effects of cordyceps have come up with many exciting results, especially in relation to cardiovascular health. One study showed that patients given a powdered supplement of cordyceps were significantly less likely to suffer heart failure. This is mainly due to the anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties of the herb, which can prevent heart arrhythmias and other complications.

Cholesterol Levels: On a similar note, one of the chemical pathways affected by cordyceps is closely related to cholesterol levels. “Bad” cholesterol levels go up, and “good” cholesterol levels can go up, effectively protecting the heart, as well as numerous other organ systems that are affected by cholesterol, such as our metabolism and endocrine system. You can help prevent atherosclerosis and subsequent heart attacks and strokes by making cordyceps a part of your weekly herbal treatments.

Respiratory Function: As mentioned above, cordyceps is able to increase the amount of oxygen taken in by the lungs, and while this is helpful for athletes, it is also beneficial for those suffering from respiratory conditions, such as asthma or chronic bronchitis. By increasing your oxygen intake, you help prevent respiratory distress and weakness. Also, increasing oxygen levels helps to oxygenate the body’s extremities better, so organ systems as a whole run more efficiently.

Cancer Prevention: People are always looking for the next big solution in the battle against cancer, and some of the unique biochemical compounds found in cordyceps certainly fit the bill in that respect. There has been direct correlations between the consumption of Cordyceps sinensis and tumor size reduction. By shrinking tumors, cordyceps can help slow the spread of cancer, and even make it easier to eliminate or put into remission. This is combined by the antioxidant activities of cordyceps, which helps to eliminate free radicals throughout the body.

Immune System Booster: Cordyceps directly stimulates the production of NK cells (Natural Killer cells), which are one of the body’s first lines of defense against infection and illness. These immune-protective effects help with a wide range of ailments, from cancer to the common cold and everything in between.

Cordyceps info-Anti-Aging Properties: Although many people claim to know the secret to anti-aging, some of the most reliable research stands behind using cordyceps, which has powerful concentrations of anti-aging compounds that can help to rejuvenate the skin, eliminate dead or dying cells, and improve the appearance of blemishes, wrinkles, and age spots, effectively shaving years off your life!

Sexual Dysfunction: One of the most interesting effects of cordyceps is its apparent impact on sexual dysfunction in men. Numerous research studies have shown that men suffering from low levels of sexual energy or poor libido saw clear improvement after adding cordyceps herbal supplements to their diet.

Detoxify the Body: Although the exact chemical pathway of this is unclear, studies have shown that kidney health improves notably after only one month of regular cordyceps herbal usage.

The preserving method comprises the following steps: washing cordyceps sinensis with linear flowing water; draining the cordyceps sinensis; putting the cordyceps sinensis in a dehumidifying device for pre-dehumidification treatment; lyophilizing the cordyceps sinensis in vacuum at low temperature; putting each piece of the cordyceps sinensis in an independent storage bottle, and sealing; taking out the storage bottle in the dehumidification device, and fixedly putting the storage bottle in a vacuum refrigeration tank. By adopting the method for preserving the cordyceps sinensis, the cordyceps sinensis is high in fresh keeping degree and good in preservation effect, can be easily kept fresh for a long time and transported for a long distance. Furthermore, the cordyceps sinensis wall-braking method has good market prospect and profit space.

OR, if you cannot follow the above, put the cordyceps in air tight bottle/containers and put it in the refrigerator at the lowest temperature (0 degrees). Or use vacuum packing techniques.

There are several techniques and ways that you can use to consume cordyceps. The recommended intake is 1g-3g per day depending on the way you use to consume.

  1. You can grind the cordyceps and make powder. Add the quantity you want in your tea, hot water, milk or any other food.
  2. Capsules: put the cordyceps powder in edible capsules and take daily 2-3 capsules a day.
  3. Soak in Water: put atleast 5g of cordyceps in luke warm water. Keep it for a month for the nutrients of the cordyceps to get into the water. Drink the water daily. Repeat the procedure with the same cordyceps 1 more time. The longer you soak, the more the nutrients will be diluted in water and the more effective it is.
  4. Soak in Liquor: Soak atleast 5g of cordyceps in any liquor atlest for 2 week. Because liquor has strong extraction qualities, the nutrients from the cordyceps gets diluted more easily than the water. Take a shot of whiskey every night.
  5. Consume Directly: You can also consume directly 1-3g daily as recommended.
